5 Things to Know About Business School Before Applying Deciding to apply to business school is a big step in your life. Youre on your way to either advancing your career or starting a completely new one. With essays, recommendations, interviews, and the GMAT, so much is involved before you start your first class. Here are five things you should know about business school before applying. 1. Everyone goes to business school for different reasons And those reasons will not necessarily match yours. Some students are more focused on academics, some only want to concentrate on building their careers, while others find the social activities most appealing. You will encounter a multitude of personalities through your MBA program, and each personfrom classmates and professors to recruiters and administratorswill have his or her own agenda. Though it can be tough, navigating these personalities is part of the process, a management skill that will serve you well as you move throughout your career. While learning what motivates other people, figure out what motivates you, too. Knowing who you are will help you find the MBA success you are seeking. 2. Dont measure your achievements by how successful you think your classmates are Everyone comes to business school with different backgrounds, skills, privileges, connections, and baggage. You may think you know, but sometimes you have no idea whats going on in the lives of your new friends. Dont make assumptions about your peers. Keep your focus on where you want to go. For instance, you might overhear that your classmate Jodywhose daily contribution to your Brand Management class is a series of prolonged snoreshas job offers from three Fortune 500 CPG companies, while youre still waiting to land an interview in finance. You presume she must be well-connected, or lucky. But what you dont know is Jody has been working in brand management for a Fortune 100 company since her sophomore year of college, and she is only applying to opportunities in the same industry and function. Instead of gauging your progress against Jodys, take her out for coffee, congratulate her on her success, and pick her brain about the culture of the finance department at her previous company. You build better networking relationships with honey than with jealousy. 3. You will have very little downtime But you still will be having a lot of fun! Let your friends and family know this before you apply. They might start to realize how busy you will be when you start the application process, with your calendar full of studying for the GMAT, wrangling recommendations, writing and rewriting essays, and attending MBA recruiting events. Once your student orientation begins, free moments will seem like a thing of the past. Classes, mixers, study groups, conferences, info sessions, and new peers will consume much of your schedule, minimizing free time outside of those endeavors. Adjust expectations accordingly and make the effort to pencil in time to catch up with your old friends and family over academic breaks. 4. Like college, students often change their concentration Even though you initially intended to enter consulting as a new career, a conversation with a second-year student who had a grueling consulting internship over the summer may change your mind. Its okay to adjust your path; dont be afraid to create a new plan. Explore new industries and functions that you had not previously considered or heard of. Find something you like, and discover how to achieve MBA success in a new way. 5. An MBA program lasts a short period of time As most alumni will tell you, business school goes by quickly, so enjoy your one-, two-, or three-year program while youre in it! Write down the goals you want to accomplish before you start, or else you might not get to them before graduation. There arent enough hours to complete all of your classwork, lead every club, participate in every case competition, attend every MBA conference, develop relationships with all of your classmates and professors, interview with every company, and start your new career in the period allotted. Pick a few significant things across those categories to maximize your experience, and add or subtract along the way. Business school is an exciting journey filled with new friends, new experiences, and a rigorous education inside and outside the classroom. Its also a brief moment in your career that wont last forever. You have the rest of your life ahead of youbut first, you have to apply and get in, of course! Understanding Common Core Science Grades 6-10 Tips From an Orange County Science Tutor: Understanding Common Core Science: Grades 6-10 Tips From an Orange County Science Tutor: Understanding Common Core Science: Grades 6-10 Southern California parents are wondering what will be expected of their children as they go through Common Core from kindergarten through 12th grade. There are many new things to learn about, and its important for parents to know if their young learner is where they need to be academically for their particular grade or age group. Considering all the information out there, its easier to learn about it if it’s broken down into smaller parts. One of the things Common Core emphasizes is English Language Arts Standards as they relate to science and technical subjects. So what exactly does this mean? Arent English and science supposed to be two separate subjects? The Common Core essentially takes the skills of critical reading and comprehension and applies them to other subjects, in this case, science. Lets take a look at some of the key skills students need to know and at what level (READ: Online Research: Whats Legit?). 1. Grades 6-8 First, students should be able to cite their source for any scientific analysis. Students should also be able to separate any prior knowledge they have about a particular technical or scientific subject from specific texts they are reading in class. They should be able to follow multiple steps when conducting a science experiment or project. These key ideas sound similar to what a English language arts student would do in English class. The same general theory is applied to other subjects. Additionally, students should be able to understand any terms or phrases that relate specifically to the subject at hand. In grade 6 through 8, students will be expected only to understand terms relevant to their particular age group. In addition to new vocabulary, science students will be expected to analyze the specific structure that an author uses in a science-specific text. Further, students are expected to understand the authors purpose for their particular  piece of writing (READ: Tips from an Irvine English tutor: decoding literature). This is a lot for students to learn already, and to be successful they will have to have skills in both the written language and science itself. In addition to the aforementioned qualities, students will be expected to integrate their knowledge and ideas. Specifically, students will need to integrate information in written text and apply it to visual text (charts, graphs, etc). Also important is the ability for students to distinguish between stated fact, reasonable opinion, and conjecture. Moreover, students will be expected to compare and contrast information from any number of sources. 2. Grades 9-10 Once students have mastered science and technical subjects at the middle school level, they will need to adjust their capabilities to meet the demands high school. In addition to skills developed to proficiency by the end of 8th grade, students in 9th and 10th grade will be expected to achieved the following. A Attend to specific details of explanations of cited texts. B-  Figure out the central idea of a text and provide an accurate summary of that text. C- Pay attention to special cases and deviations from a multiple step scientific procedure or experiment. D- Learn science-specific vocabulary at the 9th and 10th grade levels. E-   Be able to determine and notate when previous experiments differ or contrast from current experiments. If some of this information seems complicated or overly difficult, youre not alone. The Common Core expects a lot of our students and it can feel overwhelming to both students themselves and their families who are trying to help. In addition to following any updates and changes in education news, its a good idea for students to locate the appropriate support while they’re still doing well in the classroom. Whether students decide to work with a study group, educational consultant, or with their families, they are more likely to be successful if they dont have to go it alone. Survey Finds That College Students Need More Incentive to Get Vaccinated via Pixabay The survey revealed many new insights, such as new insights into increasing participation in vaccination programs on campuses, such as the fact that while a majority of college students in the U.S. (70%) believe it is important to get an annual flu vaccine, less than half (46%) actually get vaccinated. With these results, the NFID wanted to know how to best incentivize students into getting their vaccines. They found that with access to the vaccine at low or no cost (61%) and enticements, such as free food or gift cards (61%), students say it would increase their likelihood of getting vaccinated. The reason that it is so important that college students receive vaccinations is that they are at particularly high risk of getting, and spreading, the flu. This is because the college lifestyle leaves them open to frequent exposure to high-touch areas like common living spaces and classrooms, as well as their participation in social activities. “As a healthcare community, we’ve long known that college students are profoundly under-vaccinated. This new research indicates that a combination of education and incentives may be an effective way to reach college students who have been apprehensive about vaccination in the past,” said NFID Board member, Lisa S. Ipp, M.D., Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine, Associate Director of Adolescent Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital. “We now plan to work with academic, health, advocacy and student leaders to share these insights and uncover additional best practices to drive improvements in flu immunization efforts on campuses.”

Its Realistic Considering Your Other CommitmentsHave you ever met someone who says they a re going to study four hours per day, in spite of having a full-time job and three kids? Maybe they can pull it offbut its more likely that they will burn out after a few weeks and then stop studying entirely.Plan Around Your Job, Family, etc.We all have things going on in our lives, and its important to realistically assess all of our other commitments before starting a project like language learning. Heres how you can go about doing so:On a sheet of paper, make a grid showing Monday through Sunday, with each day broken down into hour-long intervals.Fill in the grid with your activities on a typical week. Include everything and be specific: If you spend an hour commuting, that should be labeled commuting, not work. If you typically go out with friends on a particular night of the week, include that.  If you watch a TV show, include that.Identify any times you dont usually have any activitiesâ€"those are your first targets for scheduling language study!Secondly, identify activities that you might be willing to give up in order to make more time for language study (especially if you didnt have any downtime in your schedule!).Lastly, find any activities in your schedule that could be overlapped with language study. Commuting is the perfect exampleâ€"its a great time to listen to language materials (but obviously not a good time to work on writing or reading if youre the one driving).Put your proposed language study times into your calendar!You can also use time management apps like Rescue Time or Focus Booster to help you locate the downtime in your scheduleâ€"and make the most of it!Dont Be Overly Ambitious!As youre working on creating a schedule that will work around your other commitments, resist the temptation to fill every waking hour with language study. That will just burn you out. A good language study plan is sustainable. So dont plan on giving up your favorite TV show or staying up two hours later every night.2. It Incorporates Diverse Learning Activit iesIncorporate Both Independent Study and InstructionYour language study plan should include time aloneâ€"time that youre listening to podcasts, learning and practicing grammar and memorizing vocabulary.But you also need to work with native speakers and get some kind of instruction, whether its from a class, from a private teacher or a language exchange partner.You can kill two birds with one stone on italki. Its a smart platform for finding free language exchange partners (native speakers of your target language, who also want to learn your native language). You can also hire professional language tutors on the platform, and youll be able to identify the ideal tutor for you based on your schedule, budget and language goals. Either way, the options here can be a huge boon for your language progress.A good language study plan needs both independent study and instructed timeâ€"and it has to be scheduled.Practice Different Language SkillsFluency in a foreign language requires mastery o f reading, writing, speaking and listening, and the best language study plans make time for all of those skills.Truly masterful study plans align the type of skill to practice with your energy level and other activities. For example, if you commute to work and can listen to a podcast in your target language every day during this time. Alternatively, if writing is the most difficult skill for you to master, schedule your writing practice at a time when you can be 100 percent focused and when you tend to be alert and energetic.3. Its Targeted Towards Your GoalsPractice the Language Skills Important to Your GoalsEveryone has different goals, and you need to make sure your language study plan reflects yours, not someone elses. So if your language goal is to read original-language literature, your study plan should be heavy on reading practice. If you need to use the language at work, it should focus on business vocabulary.Make Goal-specific BenchmarksBenchmarks in general are essential to a good language study plan, but you also need benchmarks that are specific to your aims. Scoring high marks on a test that measures reading ability isnt that useful if you really want to improve your speaking ability. Here are some sample benchmarks that might be relevant to specific goals:Have a conversation in your target language with a native speaker.Read a complete book in your target language. (You could even be so specific as to specify which book to read.)Watch a movie without subtitles in your target language.4. It Includes Periodic, Measurable EvaluationYoull need some way to determine if your plan is workingâ€"and those evaluation mechanisms should in fact be part of your study plan. Some of the more well-known exams are the HSK for Chinese, the DE LF/DALF for French and the DELE for Spanish.Incorporate taking these exams into your general study plan. They will provide an outside, objective evaluation of your progress, and give you an idea of which language skills you are comparatively weaker in. You dont want to say, Ill do one hour of listening practice this week. Instead, it should be, Every Tuesday and Thursday I do half an hour  of listening practice while I ride the train to work between 8:30 and 9 in the morning.Youre more likely to follow through week after week if you have the exact time and place nailed down in advance!Avoid InterruptionsYour language time must be sacredâ€"no text messages distracting you, no roommates offering you dinner and no kids begging for attention. Having scheduled activities helps manage interruptions enormously, because you can communicate to the people around you that youre not available.With the right language study plan, you can make continued progress towards fluency in your target language.Learning a language often requires slow but steady progress, and having a solid plan will help you keep on track for the long haul.Happy studying!
